Chase leads to fatal crash after Georgia man takes fiance from parents' home

Couple killed in fiery Carroll County wreck

TEMPLE, Ga.(WXIA)  -- Police said a 20-year-old man and his 16-year-old girlfriend were killed in a wreck after he abducted her from home in Temple, Ga., at gunpoint Thanksgiving night.

"This is a tragedy all the way around," said Carroll County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Brad Robinson.

Robinson said the man, who authorities identified as Elijah Cox, and the teenage girl, had been living together at his mother's home in Villa Rica over the past several days. Her family decided that they didn't like the situation and took her back home to Temple.

Robinson said that at about 8 p.m. Thursday, Cox showed up at the family's home, armed with a shotgun. While family members hid in the home, they called 911. Cox took the girl and fled in a dark-colored vehicle.

As Carroll County deputies approached the home, a dark-colored vehicle passed them at a high rate of speed, going in the opposite direction.

Turning around and giving chase, deputies found that the vehicle they were chasing belonged to the suspect.

During the chase, the vehicle crashed and burst into flames, near the intersection of Rainey Road and Taylors Gin Road, killing both people inside. The cause of death will be confirmed after an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Robinson said the identity of the 16-year-old has not been released yet, though he did say that she was enrolled in a local high school.

"I'm just thankful that more people were not killed," Robinson said, given the situation and the fact that Cox was armed.
