Police arrest woman, find baby koala in her backpack

WISHART, Australia --- Police in Australia confiscated an unexpected item from a woman they arrested this week.

Officials stopped a 50-year-old woman in Wishart, Australia – a suburb of Brisbane – and arrested her for outstanding matters. When they asked her if she had anything to declare, she handed over a zipped green canvas bag, telling officers it was a baby koala.

“Not quite believing their ears, the officers cautiously un-zipped the bag and found this gorgeous boy,” wrote a spokesperson from the Queensland Police Service in a press release.

The woman told officers she had found the joey abandoned and was caring for it.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) took the koala. The joey is believed to be about six months old, and was in good health, though a bit dehydrated.

“He’s been on fluids but is doing well and will shortly be going out to a carer,” said RSPCA spokesperson Michael Beatty. “We’ve called him Alfred.”
