Stolen Dog was Woman's Last Gift from her Husband

Woman leaves car running at Food Lion on Sunset blvd and someone steals car with dog inside

West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A car stolen at a grocery store had something much more precious inside for one Midlands woman.

On a trip to the Food Lion on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia, 75-year-old Carol Marshall lost her car and her dog Sassy.

"She's so sweet," Marshall said about her dog.

Marshall says she blames herself for what happened Sassy.

"I was at Food Lion shopping and I left the car running where the air conditioner was on for her because it was kind of hot," Marshall explained.

Thirty minutes later, Marshall says she came out of the store and the car was gone with Sassy still in it.

"She's the last thing my husband gave me," Marshall said.

Marshall's husband died of cancer nine years ago.

"They told him he had three to six months to live so he went and bought me a puppy to keep me company," Marshall said.

Marshall says this loss is a pain that cuts just as deep.

"Losing her is like losing him again," Marshall said through her tears.

"Sassy was the only comfort she had," said Marshall's sister-in-law Sue Ann Marshall.

Sue Ann says the family has not stopped looking for the dog.

"My son's been riding the streets all day," Sue Ann said.

All they can do now is look at old photos of Sassy until they can reunite.

"I just want my puppy back, that's all," Marshall said, "I don't care about the car."
