Teen's homecoming dream denied

Albuquerque teen told she can't run for Homecoming King because rules state only males-by-birth can run.

(KOB) -- An Albuquerque high school student says the gender on her birth certificate is stopping her from running for homecoming royalty.

Amanda Cordova wants to be prom king, but school leaders say it's against the rules.

Cordova says she grew up identifying herself with the masculine heroes in childhood books and movies. Her goals of being voted homecoming royalty never involved any queenly ambition.

"It's always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl," Cordova said.

Cordova said she's fit to be king, so she asked school leaders.

"They were really respectful about it," she said.

But it was a categorical "no." The rules, quite simply, say males-by-birth can run for homecoming king, and females-by-birth can run for homecoming queen.
