F-16 pilot rescued after mid-air crash off VA coast

CHINCOTEAGUE-The Coast Guard rescued a pilot after two National Guard jets collided off Chincoteague.

The F-16C Falcons, assigned to the 113th Wing D.C. Air National Guard, were training off the Eastern Shore around 10:300 p.m. Thursday,  The collision occurred about 35 miles off the coast.

One pilot ejected and was recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard. The other pilot was able to fly back to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

Radar at the Navy's Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility on Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach confirmed the mid-air collision.

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City got to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Friday and recovered the pilot.

Both pilots were treated at the hospital on base. The Air National Guard is investigating the incident.
