MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Getting across town from Matthews to Charlotte to Pineville, just got easier, thanks to a new CATS bus route that begins today.

It’s called 51 Pineville-Matthews Road and is a crosstown route operating along Pineville-Matthews Road between Carolina Place Mall and Windsor Square.

People who live and work in the area say it will help everyone, from Senior Citizens to teenagers to commuters who want to save money on gas.

The owner of the Charlotte Café says it will help employment in the area also.

“I think it will be good for business and will bring more traffic to the Arobretum,” said Charlotte Café hostess Joyce Amir.

“It’s going to also help us expand our employment area because up to this point it’s been difficult for people from the inner city and other parts that don’t have their own transportation to take the positions out here in Ballantyne and the Arboretum and all the areas out this way,” said Charlotte Café owner Jim Roupas.

The new route is one of two new CATS routes beginning June third.

The second is the 46x Harrisburg Road Express which will utilize Albermarle Road and extend to Harrisburg Road.
