CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Douglas International Airport is installing a new $300,000 steel and glass sculpture at the entrance to the airport from Billy Graham Parkway before next month’s Democratic National Convention.
The sculpture was designed by artist Ed Carpenter of Portland, Oregon and will soon be named by Charlotte’s Public Arts Commission.
The steel is 60 feet tall and 25 feet wide and was fabricated at SteelFab, a Charlotte company located behind the airport.
The airport will spend an additional $100,000 preparing the site for the installation, which was paid for by the city’s one percent for the arts fund.
