BELMONT, N.C. -- The Belmont woman hurt after a gun was fired on New Year's Eve is speaking out.

Melissa Verners, 24, said it all started when she heard a commotion in her garage. Belmont police had found her boyfriend there after getting a report of road rage.

Verners said when she went to check it out, the officers pointed guns at her. She says at first, she thought it might have been a robbery.

Investigators say they struggled with Verners, and a gun went off. Verners and an officer were hit by bullet pieces

“For the rest of my life I’m going to have shrapnel in my leg,” Verners said. “I was told by more than one doctor I was lucky to have my leg.”

Verners and her attorney say the officers should be held accountable for what they did. Belmont police say since it's an open investigation, they don't have a comment.
