CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Douglas International Airport will open a new 60,000 square foot addition to its 30-year-old terminal on Friday, adding five lanes to check-in near concourses D and E, speeding up check-in for international and commuter passengers.
Because the security check-in can serve passengers who fly out of any of the five concourses, airport managers hope the new lines will shrink lines and waiting time for all passengers.
But airport director Jerry Orr says that depends on how the Transportation Security Administration staffs the new check-in.
The new space will also house new offices, training facilities and break rooms for the TSA.
A new baggage screening beltline winds through the new building and is scheduled to be fully operational in 2014.
Charlotte has the nation's 11th busiest airport, employing more than 20,000 people "behind the fence," according to Orr.
