CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- What's in your wallet?  Well, if it's cash you are going to be out of luck at the Cinebarre in The Arboretum shopping center.

Friday night found crowds headed to the opening of the Great Gatsby, but if Gatsby himself showed up with cash, he'd be turned away starting next month.

The theater has posted signs telling customers that as of May 31, Cinebarre will no longer accept cash at the ticket window.

"Well, I don't think it is a very good idea," said Joan Ciucevich, who had just paid cash for two tickets.  "I never use a credit card when I go to a movie.  I always use cash."

No one from the theater would speak on the record, but an employee who would not give a name and was not authorized to speak publicly, said the reason for the new policy was a security concern because of the amount of cash that would accumulate on a busy night.

Rob McDowell was buying tickets Friday night along with his daughter, Caitlyn.  He said he was not concerned about the new policy.

"I rarely use cash," he said.

Caitlyn then interrupted him, saying, "Really?  I use cash for everything."

Rylie Acquilanti came to see the Great Gatsby with her mother and said she does not pack plastic.

"No, and me and my friends do come here and pretty much all pay cash because we are still in high school," she said.

Her mother, Chris, added, "You know, she's off to college and I'm sure at that time she'll have a credit card or debit card."

A call to the corporate headquarters of Cinebarre was not returned as of Friday evening.
