CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A playground honoring the victims of the Newtown school shooting is on hold.

Mecklenburg Park and Rec officials say they need the public's help.

The current playground at the Park Road park is due for an upgrade and a new one is in the works, but officials were hoping to break ground in June.

According to Peter Cook with Park and Rec, "we have a useful life that we apply to our all of facilities, equipment and playgrounds and it's the end.  [It's] just past its useful life."

After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary last December, the department decided to dedicate the new playground to the 26 victims.

"It's honoring the teachers and the students that were lost in that tragedy and it's a rebirth.  When children are at play their having fun and it's a nice place for families to go and reflect and enjoy the outdoors," said Cook.

They went to local CMS schools to get input from students to come up with a design.

"It's really a great process to see in action when you get a six-year-old talking about their whimsical playground experience and what they like," said Cook.

At this point, they've raised about $140,000 of the $250,000 dollars needed for the project, and they're still waiting for more donations.  They hope to start construction in 2014.
