RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Some North Carolina cities want the Division of Motor Vehicles to block registrations for those who don't pay parking tickets.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports (http://bit.ly/12ol5rL) the city hopes to collect about $350,000 a year in unpaid parking tickets if lawmakers authorize the practice.
The DMV already blocks vehicle registrations for a number of reasons. Those include those who owe money to the DMV, or for unpaid child support, unpaid vehicle taxes, failure to pass vehicle inspection or for failing to have auto insurance.
Charlotte, Greensboro and Wilmington like the idea.
Paul Meyer with the North Carolina League of Municipalities says the idea could generate an important amount of money.
Raleigh officials say the city is owed nearly $4 million in unpaid parking tickets since 2006.
