CHERRYVILLE, N.C. -- Emergency crews responded to a home in Gaston County Sunday afternoon after receiving a call of a deck collapse.

Authorities were dispatched to the home in the 400 block of Oak Grove Road in Cherryville around 3 on Sunday.

Fire officials say there were about 25 people on the deck at the time of the collapse; they were attending a family Fourth of July party at the home, and were preparing to eat at the time of the incident.

Four people were extricated from the collapse, two of which were pinned underneath the structure, two more tangled in the debris near the top, fire officials say.

A total of 18 people were treated on the scene by paramedics. Three more people were hospitalized for treatment. Two of the patients were taken to Cleveland Memorial, one was taken to CMC Lincolnton, authorities say.

The deck was over 20 years old, officials say, and couldn't withstand the weight.
