CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After years of fruitless efforts to reinvigorate it, Eastland Mall is coming down.

Demolition crews from Environmental Holdings Group are about a week into heavy demolition, and the firm expects to be done in six months, said Victor Wilson, a manager for the company.

Working under an $871,000 contract with the city, the crews are ripping down some 1.2 million square feet of the old mall, which was one of the city’s retail jewels when it opened in 1975 until its slow demise, which ended with its closure in 2010.

The city, which bought the mall for $13.2 million, is in negotiations with Studio Charlotte, a development group that wants to put a massive movie studio, hotel, retail, office space and residential units on the site.
