GASTONIA, N.C. -- Emergency crews in Gastonia rescued a man who fell in a manhole on Wednesday night.
Officials said they rescued a man who fell 9-feet and became stuck in a manhole overnight along East Long Avenue.
The man was not found until Thursday morning when workers nearby heard him calling for help.
The manhole had no cover when the victim was walking in the area. According to a city official, the manhole cover was stolen and city did not know it was uncovered.

The man was pulled from the manhole around 8:40 a.m. and taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Officials said he suffered a fractured hip and minor hypothermia. The name of the victim has not been released.
Workers have since covered the hole with concrete. Thieves also stole a meter cover nearby and damaged some cars near the businesses--all of those crimes may be related.
