The fire was reported about 4 a.m. at the building, in the 500 block of Homespun Hills Drive.

Fire victim Lisa Hensley tells NBC Charlotte she had to jump from a bedroom window to escape the flames, and that Brubaker was her next door neighbor.

Officials say the deceased is not an Appalachian State student.

That is at the western edge of Boone and not far from the southwest edge of the ASU campus. Boone firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the four-unit apartment building when they arrived.

Crews were able to bring the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, but at least two of the four apartment units were heavily damaged.
