WAXHAW, N.C. -- A fire destroyed a home in Waxhaw Thursday morning while the family was on vacation in Florida.
Fire officials said a home off of Kensington Drive in the Quellin subdivision caught fire around 3:30 a.m.
It took about 30 firefighters to get the fire under control, but the home suffered massive damage from the fire.
David Hord and his family live on the same cul-de-sac where the home burned. He and his family were evacuated from their home when firefighters realized there were embers on their roof and driveway.
"We jumped up really quick and got out and the whole cul-de-sac was just full of everybody, he said. "Neighbors were out here. There was nothing we could do. That place was just going up."

Neighbors said the family that lived in the house was on vacation in Florida.
The family was notified and was on the way back to North Carolina on Thursday morning. Hord and his wife said they are friends with the family who lives in the destroyed home.
"They have an 8-year-old and I think a 3-year-old and it's just, you know, it's horrible."
The Union County Fire Marshall says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
