CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the last five years revelers have welcomed the New Year in a number of locations in Charlotte's uptown-area as part of the annual First Night Celebrations.

This year, thousands will watch the crown raise at the city's newest park.

"The first change is that it’s in Romare Bearden Park, so that's all brand new, and the second change is that there are no more wristbands," said Moira Quinn of Center City Partners, who organize the family friendly event.

"The sponsors have stepped up and made it possible for us to have all the events for free for everyone." said Quinn.

Children’s events will be held at the park starting at 1 p.m., a countdown starting at 5:50 p.m., and events for adults starting at 10 p.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police will also have extra security for the event.

General parking will be $5 and $10 depending on parking locations. The $5 general parking will include:

228 S. Church Street
500 W. Trade Street
214 N. Graham Street
208 S. Poplar Street
311 S. Poplar Street
400 S. Tryon Street (garage)
330 S. Tryon Street (garage)
