CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The First Ward Community Fund on Tuesday presented a pair of police bikes to the Central Division of CMPD.

In the latter part of 2010 the Fund organized a raffle, as a fundraiser, to purchase a new bike for use in First Ward and Uptown. Thanks to participation from the community and local restaurants such as Blue Restaurant & Bar and Villa Francesca, the raffle was a success and the Community Fund was able to purchase two bikes rather than one.

Captain Estes was "pleased to receive the generous gift" and said, "The bikes will be put in service immediately as replacements for aging bikes in the inventory."

Councilwoman Patsy Kinsey was on hand for the presentation and said she "was excited to see, first-hand, the strong relationship which has developed between First Ward, a HOPE VI community, and the Police Department."

Darlene Heater from Charlotte Center City Partners helped to deliver the bikes said, "Center City and CMPD are fortunate to have tremendous support from the First Ward Community Fund. For nearly a decade, this organization has provided programs and contributions to our community that positively impact the First Ward neighborhood as well as Center City. We appreciate their many efforts to make this a great place to live, work and play."

The First Ward Community Fund is a nonprofit corporation with a mission to provide educational, cultural and social enrichment for the residents of First Ward.
