CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Overnight lane closures start this weekend on I-485 in south Charlotte.

Crews will strengthen the shoulders by milling out the slope, making it even and laying down new asphalt.

A lane on the inner loop will close at 9 p.m. Sunday, April 14, until 6 a.m. Monday, April 15, weather permitting.

Crews will then focus on the outer loop.

It's just the beginning of what's expected to be two years worth of construction to widen I-485 from four to six lanes between I-77 and Rea Road.

After the lane closures and shoulder reinforcement, crews will put up barriers and move to the grass median.  That median will be replaced with concrete.  Crews will then start work on the new lanes.

Drivers don’t expect the overnight lane closures to affect them very much, since it is not during the morning or evening rush hour.

More than 100,000 people drive that area daily.

Drivers say putting up with the construction moving forward is just something they will have to get used to.

“We don’t have the patience for it, but hey, like the saying goes, all good things come to those who wait,” said driver Larry Patterson.

“In the long run, it’s going to be a third lane, so it’s going to be easier,” said driver Emad Saad.
