DENVER, N.C. -- Authorities say a lightning strike caused a sewage pump to fail, sending wastewater into an unnamed cove which flows into Lake Norman in the Catawba River Basin.
On Thursday, crews worked to fix the damaged sewage pump located in the 4400 block of Burton Lane near the Lakewood subdivision in Denver.
Authorities say the pump failure resulted in an estimated 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage to flow into an unnamed cove which runs into Lake Norman in the Catawba River Basin.
The Lincoln County Health Department was notified. Water samples from three sites in the affected area showed test results below the required minimum levels at all three sites, and now meets the North Carolina Division of Water Quality standards.
Health officials recommended that all boaters, fishermen and swimmers avoid contact with lake water in the area. On Monday, the 'no swimming advisory' was lifted by the health department.
