CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two local libraries will be open an extra day each week starting September 13.
The Matthews and Davidson branch libraries will offer six more hours of service, thanks to help and support from volunteers and town leaders.
The library system was forced to cut operating hours after budget cuts were announced for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Community libraries had been open six days a week, but after 183 jobs were lost that was cut to four days a week.
Libraries began a push for volunteers in June and officials said they hoped to extend hours by October 1, but due to the number of volunteers, they’re able to reopen two libraries for an extra day each week three weeks ahead of schedule.
