Veteran who faces jail for junk in yard fights on, gets support

CLOVER, SC -- A 79-year-old Korean War veteran, threatened with a $500 fine or 30 days in jail, has received support from people as far away as California and Florida.

John Ramsey of Clover was cited for having an unsightly front yard in January.  He lives on a dead-end road and sells used items out of his yard.  He and his wife live on a fixed income of less than $900 a month.  They both have significant health issues.

After NBC Charlotte first aired his story on September 21, he has received nearly $200 from strangers wanting to help.

Despite efforts to clean up his yard, in August a judge ruled him in contempt of court for not doing more.  On October 4, he will face a magistrate judge and must pay the $500 fine or go to jail.

“They want $500.  That's $20, $30 cash a week?  That's just taking my wife's money, and I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it.  I'll take the 30 days and make them pay the $49 a day for me being in jail, plus three meals a day,” Ramsey said.

Friends are holding a yard sale on September 29 in Clover as a fundraiser.  Ramsey’s wife, Patty, says several companies have come forward offering to pay the fine.
