CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Bryan Gilliam, Monroe’s assistant police chief, will become the city’s acting chief when Debra Duncan retires Sept. 1.

The announcement was made Tuesday night by new City Manager John D’Agostino. He said a comprehensive search will be launched for a permanent chief.

Duncan, who is retiring and also running for city council, received a resolution and plaque in her honor, as well as a watch, from the city. Council members stood and applauded, as did a packed meeting room with police officers and others.

“You did a great job for the city,” Mayor Bobby Kilgore told Duncan, the chief since July 2006.

She praised her colleagues on the force and added, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as your police chief, and I hope to continue to serve y’all in the near future.”
