CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A new program makes getting free school supplies to students as easy as a click of the mouse.

Classroom Central launched the program in January.

The organization provides disadvantaged students in our area with school supplies, but, just a couple of months ago, teachers could only get those essentials from Classroom Central's free store on Wilkinson Boulevard.

However, according to some educators, getting to the free store could be tricky.

"I tutor on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so it makes it hard to get out there," said Piney Grove Elementary teacher Cathey Cooper.

Now teachers can get many of those same supplies without ever leaving the classroom.

Through the new program, teachers order the supplies on Classroom Central's website once a month.  Those supplies are then delivered to the school.

According to Classroom Central Executive Director, Jill Dineen,  school supplies are vital to a good education.

"Pencils are not just pencils they really help a student achieve academically," she said.  Mrs. Cooper agrees.

She's been teaching for decades and says, in the past few years, she's seen a real need for free school supplies.

According to the teacher, many students are distracted with questions like, "how is my mom going to react when I need a new notebook when we don't have enough money to pay the bills this month?"

The new Classroom Central Program is helping to fill that gap.

Right now, it's only available in 17 CMS schools, but it's been so successful, that it will expand to more schools this fall, and then eventually to other districts.

Classroom Central is always looking for donations, both supplies and monetary.  If you'd like to help visit their website, here.
