MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Rain has put a damper on what thousands typically enjoy every Labor Day.

The annual Matthews Alive festival in Matthews kicked off on Friday and normally runs through Monday.

But this year, organizers made the call early to cancel Monday's events because of the weather.

They say it was a tough decision because the event is so popular and proceeds from the festival benefit dozens of local charities.

“We made probably the most difficult decision we'eve ever made,” said Matthews Alive Organizer Lee Myers.  “This is my 19th Matthews Alive and we've never had to close the festival before.  Because of safety concerns and the weather, this is going to be the year that we do not see a Monday as part of the Matthews Alive festival.”

The Kiwanis Club's Labor Day 5K run was still held Monday morning but the Matthews Auto and Motorcycle Classic is canceled.
