ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Four people are charged following a traffic stop and subsequent search of a home that turned up drugs, guns and "extremely unsanitary" living conditions with children present, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.

On Friday morning, officers with the York County Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic stop. In the stop, deputies found Mark Cray Thompson, Jr. and Karen Harris to be in possession of heroin.

The discovery led officials to search the home of Thompson and Harris, where they say more drug evidence was found in Thompson and Karen's bedroom.

Jodi Harris, Karen Harris' daughter, and her boyfriend Scott Caldwell live at the residence, too, with their 1-year-old son and Jodi's 7-year-old daughter.

Officials report finding a loaded semi-automatic .40 pistol under a pillow on Jodi and Caldwell's bed-- the bed which sits right next to a child's playpen, putting it within reach of the two children.

Authorities say the home was in an "extremely unsanitary state", with decaying food, overwhelming odor of animal fecal matter, trash and dirty clothing in large stacks throughout the home.

Caldwell, officials say, is prohibited from owning a firearm by federal standards. He's charged with unlawful conduct towards a child. His girlfriend, Jodi, is facing the same charge.

Thompson is charged with possession of heroin, third offense. Karen Harris is charged with possession of heroin.

The Department of Social Services was notified, and the children were removed from the home and released to a family member.
