MCADENVILLE, N.C. -- A mysterious, and somewhat disgusting find was made over the weekend in Gaston County.

Neighbors first thought dragonflies overtook the McAdenville bridge, after they noticed hundreds of thousands of bugs piled up on it.

It turned out they are dead mayflies.

A bug expert at NC State said this find isn’t unusual at certain times of the year. Mayflies don’t live long and die shortly after mating.

“It smells like rotten carcass, even though it’s just bugs,” Carson, a young passerby said.

Mayflies are said to be sensitive to the environment and their presence is a good indicator that the water is clean.
