MATTHEWS, N.C. -- One branch campus of an area university is making a big move.

Wingate University is relocating their Matthews campus to Ballantyne for the fall semester.  All of the 600 students that attend Wingate University in Matthews will be affected.

The university had been outgrowing their classrooms and parking for a while.

The new building will allow them to expand and take on more students eventually.  Officials also say Ballantyne's up and coming reputation is a good fit for both students and the community.

"As we know Ballantyne is a key economic growth engine for the Charlotte region and the Ballantyne Corporate Park is the epicenter of that area," said Mark Bryant, Director of graduate business and adult education.

Some in Matthews are disappointed by the decision, according to Tina Whitley, Executive Director of the Matthews Chamber of Commerce.

She says Wingate University was a huge draw at Matthews Station.

"The students, they come in and they buy, they wander around the streets before class.  After class, they hang out in the coffee shop," she said.

However, the university says the move is a must and many Ballantyne residents are looking forward to welcoming Wingate.

"I'm a teacher and I've taken online classes through CPCC, so that might be of a benefit to folks who work out of this area," said Robin Ebert.
