GASTONIA, N.C. -- Police in Gastonia are trying to stop a sudden dramatic rise in the number of home break-ins.

They said three neighborhoods have been particularly hit hard: Poston Circle off Franklin Avenue, Highland off Davidson Avenue and Mountain View off of Hudson Boulevard.

Around Poston Circle, neighbors said they are well aware of the rash of homes being broken into.

"They are everywhere," said Adam Browning. He said he's moving because of the break-ins.

Investigators have arrested four men so far but the break-ins have continued and police aren't sure if they are dealing with an organized crime ring.

"It is still under investigation and until we can make some more arrests, these are questions we are looking at," said Gastonia Police spokesperson Donna Lahser.

Investigators said the thieves look for a home where it appears no one is around. They then knock on the door and if there is no answer, they look for a secluded spot to break-in.

"They are looking for things that they can make an easy dollar with on the street," Lahser said. "Like all the electronic devices that are so popular these days."

Some in the neighborhood said they have guns and would not hesitate to use them if their home is targeted.

Lashelle Sanders, who lives in Poston Circle, said, "Some of the break-ins go wrong and if they got a gun or something like that, that's not safe."

Gastonia Police detectives are offering a reward for tips leading to arrests and prosecution. The number to call is (704) 866-6880.
