GASTONIA, N.C. -- The search is on for the man responsible for robbing a bank in Gastonia on Wednesday.

The First National Bank in the 500 block of South New Hope Road was robbed late Wednesday morning.

Police describe the suspect as a white male with a full, "scraggly" beard, approximately 6-foot-tall, weighing between 250 and 275 pounds, wearing a blue shirt with the words "slick" or perhaphs "slack", a ball cap and sunglasses.

Gastonia Police say the suspect indicated he had a weapon, demanded cash and fled the scene on foot. They added that a vehicle may have picked him up.

Police are searching for a suspect; a K9 unit is assisting in the search.

The suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
