GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) -- City leaders in Gastonia are considering fines and other measures to get the attention of landlords whose properties require frequent visits by police.

The Gaston Gazette reported Friday that council members have told the city attorney to write an ordinance imposing fines and other consequences on owners of properties with problem tenants.

Police say they were called to one neighborhood 100 times in less than a year to deal with issues ranging from drug activity to noise to assaults.

City officials say they hope the ordinance will encourage landlords to take action against problem tenants.
