GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a woman who worked at a Gastonia law firm is accused of defrauding the state and a local man.

The Gaston Gazette reports the Gaston County Police Department said 42-year-old Dena Cloninger Beaty is charged with exploitation of an elder or disabled adult, fraud of a medical provider, obtaining property by false pretense, fraud of food stamps and forgery.

Beaty is free on an unsecured bond. A phone listing for Beaty couldn't be found Tuesday.

Sgt. R.S. Dover said that in one instance, Beaty filed an insurance claim for a man, but instead of giving the man his $16,000 for the fraudulent claim, Beaty kept the money.

The indictment handed down last week also says Beaty got food stamps for one relative by claiming he was unemployed.
