GASTONIA, N.C. – According to police, a mother left her mentally handicapped daughter chained to a hotel bed while she attended a wedding party.
Authorities tell NBC Charlotte the incident happened Saturday night at the Courtyard Marriott on Remount Road. Concerned guests called hotel staff after seeing the girl roam about the hotel.
According to the Gastonia Police, when staff went into the hotel room, they discovered a chain protruding from underneath the mattress. Police said the teen had the mental capacity of a young child.
The girl’s ankle was handcuffed to the bed – but she was somehow able to manipulate the chain and leave the room, authorities said.
When the mother, Tiffany Michelle Davis, 37, of Pasadena Maryland, arrived at the hotel she admitted to leaving her daughter.
Davis told investigators they were visiting from out of state and she didn’t have any family available to watch her child.
The mother was booked in to the Gaston County Jail under a $100,000 bond, but her bond has since been raised to $200,000. She's charged with one count of felony neglect.
Authorities said Adult Protective Services was notified and the teen was sent to the hospital – she is expected to be OK.
Davis is scheduled to appear in court on Monday
