GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A controversial shopping plaza will not be built in Gastonia.
The city council defeated a proposal for the plaza, which neighbors have been buzzing about for months.
Emotions ran high at a public meeting at the Gaston County courthouse, where residents discussed rezoning a 104,000 square foot shopping center near Robinwood and Kendrick Roads.
Some wanted the plaza, hoping it would bring new jobs. Others called defeating the proposal a victory.
The hearing lasted more than four hours. Members of the city council were deadlocked at 3-3. The proposal failed because a protest petition was filed, meaning the plaza couldn’t happen without a majority vote.
