GASTONIA, N.C. – Four strangers are being hailed as heroes after saving a man in a burning car alongside Kendrick Road Tuesday night.
“If we would've waited, it would've been too late,” said Steve Hardy, who arrived after the other men on scene.
Hardy, along with Michael Ewing, Eric Crane, and Matt Hudson were able to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but flames reignited. With no first responders on scene, the four men decided to break the window on the truck and pull the driver to safety.
“When we laid him down and looked up, the whole car, the whole truck was on fire. I don't think there was a minute to spare,” he said.
Fire engines and an ambulance arrived on scene minutes later. By that point, Hardy says the driver was safely away from the burning car and responsive. The driver was taken to the Caromont Regional Hospital.
“The Gastonia Fire Department salutes these four brave citizens for saving the life of the driver,” said Chris Stowe with G.F.D.
