HICKORY, N.C. -- A large sinkhole opened up Thursday afternoon on Highway 70 in Hickory, covering nearly a full lane of the road.
The sinkhole is in a westbound lane of the highway, across the street from Valley Hills Mall.
Detours have been set up and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.
It's unknown when the sinkhole will be filled.
The sinkhole is about a mile away from the location where a sinkhole opened up in 2002, swallowing a parking lot and a Corvette. That sinkhole was blamed on the collapse of a drainage pipe.
