HICKORY, N.C. – A Hickory police officer is on leave after shooting a man Saturday night.
The incident happened off Highway 70. According to a press release, Officer Bruce Bumgarner attempted to stop a Ford Explorer but the driver kept going.
In the midst of the chase, the driver lost control and flipped the SUV. The suspect, 36-year-old Irecas Valentine, reportedly got out of his vehicle and took off running.
The press release goes on to state a short time later Valentine stopped running from the officer and turned to face him in an aggressive manner.
Officer Bumgarner then shot Valentine. The suspect was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist medical Center.
The incident is under investigation, and Bumgarner is on paid administrative leave.
