Computer glitch sending wrong bills for toll road

HICKORY, N.C. – North Carolina Highway 540 pioneered the state’s new QuickPass toll system, but Tina Calle of Hickory isn’t a fan.

Calle doesn’t drive Highway 540 and doesn’t have a QuickPass, yet the Department of Transportation sent her a bill for 24 tolls for January.

The quick pass toll system allows you to pay later if you don’t buy the sensor. The camera simply snaps a photo as you go by then sends the image to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV then runs the tag and generates a bill you’ll eventually get in the mail.

“Well, according to them (the DMV), I drive a white SUV Hyundai,” Calle said.

Tina drives a black BMW, not the white SUV that was photographed 24 times on Highway 540 in January.  The DMV computer misread the numbers in the photo, generated an invoice and left Tina to deal with the problem.

“My question is, what if someone doesn’t have the time to be inconvenienced for this kind of stuff,” Calle asked.

The DMV and the North Carolina Department of Transportation told NewsChannel 36 everything is OK and that it’s a new computer system with a few glitches.

In fact, they say the mistakes are happening in less than 1 percent of the 30,000 invoices being sent out.

The DMV computer is having trouble reading specialty plates with stacked letters and numbers on one end. If you get a bill for toll that wasn’t you, don’t throw it away.  Ultimately, it’s you that has to call the state to help fix their problem.

“I have to do all the legwork,” Calle pointed out.
