LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. -- The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man on a misdemeanor charge for allegedly dragging a donkey down a rural road.

The Sheriff's Office says Richard Hudson, 68, tethered a donkey to a trailer hitch on the back of his van and dragged the animal about three-tenths of a mile.

When authorities arrived on the scene Thursday evening, Hudson was walking, leading the animal northbound on Plateau Road in the western part of the county.

A witness cared for the animal, who suffered scrapes and was bleeding from its legs and hind parts, while Hudson was taken into custody.

Authorities say the scrape marks on the roadway indicated the donkey had been dragged more than three-tenths of a mile.

The donkey has been placed in to an animal shelter via Lincoln County Animal Services.

Hudson is charged with misdemeanor conveying animals in a cruel manner. He's since been released on a $4000 bond.
