CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A local support group is reaching out to people with spinal cord injuries.  Spinergy meets once a month at Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville.

It's the only support group of it's kind here in the Charlotte area.  Huntersville resident Ben Allsup says he founded the group after he realized a major need in the region.  Ben was injured on the job several years ago.

He says he sat around his home for three years feeling depressed when his family finally urged him to get motivated.  He looked around for a support group but, says he couldn't fine an active one.  That's when he started Spinergy and it's made all the difference.

"It makes me feel good that i can help someone out and it helps myself be productive again," said Allsup.

Andy Arnette joined the group in September.  He's been in wheel chair 27 years ago.  Arnette says he surprised at how little resources there are for people with spinal cord injuries.

"Wow, it was like these people don't have a clue of what to do when go from the four walls of a hospital to go to the four walls of home," he said.

Spinergy now has more than 50 members.
