MATTHEWS, N.C. -- The town of Matthews has received a grant to establish its second community garden.

The community garden is used by residents who would like to plant flowers or vegetables, but don’t have the space. For $30 a year, residents are able to rent an eight-foot by six-foot plot.

The garden is so popular that there is a waiting list.

In the coming months, the town will identify the best place for the second community garden, and use the grant money to establish it.

The grant is worth $3,000 and was provided to the town by three different organizations.

The Nourishing North Carolina Program, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and the North Carolina Recreation & Park Association are all credited with helping the town receive these funds.

For more information on the Community Garden contact the Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department at 704-321-7275.
