MATTHEWS, N.C. – More than 100 workers in Matthews will soon be without a job.

Maryland-based construction firm Structural Preservation Systems is closing its Matthews office and that means 125 layoffs will begin within the next 30 days.

In August, the jobless rate in Mecklenburg County was 11 percent.

Construction jobs have been particularly hard to come by since many projects have been put on hold.
