CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The man wanted for the attempted kidnapping of a 7-year-old girl on Saturday was arrested by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Tuesday afternoon, not far from where the crime happened.
According to CMPD, Matthew Alejandro Cruz, 18, did not live at the same apartment complex where the attempted abduction took place -- the Long Creek Club -- but he did live nearby. On Tuesday, an alert resident of Long Creek Club noticed Cruz back in the complex and called 911.
Cruz then ran from the complex but police caught up with him across the street and arrested him.
Police said Cruz grabbed the girl Saturday while she played, picked her up and ran behind an apartment building. The child screamed for help and was released. She was not injured. Investigators say Cruz then ran from the scene.
Wednesday, CMPD released the 911 call from the attempted kidnapping. In the call, the mother of the young victim describes what happened.
"Someone tried to kidnap my 7-year-old," said the woman.
“My daughter and the other children-- they were playing outside, and there was a guy who tried-- actually, picked her up and took her over to another building,” explained the mother to the 911 operator.
Wednesday, neighbors who live in the Long Creek Club apartments say they are relieved that the alleged kidnapper was arrested.
"It's a comfort for the neighborhood," said RJ Stanford, who has lived in the complex for over a year.
"There are a lot of kids here. It just brings comfort, he continued.
Cruz has been charged with second degree kidnapping, assault on a child under 12 and resisting arrest. His bond has been set at $500,000.
He has a scheduled court appearance for Thursday.
