ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A pit bull that attacked a boy in Rock Hill Wednesday has been put down.

Police said an 11-year-old boy, who neighbors identified as Kenny, went to a neighbor's house on Ridgecrest Road to borrow a utensil Wednesday evening. That neighbor's pit bull broke the clamp on its leash and attacked the boy, biting his right hand and arm and tearing off part of his scalp.

Officers found part of the boy's scalp in the yard and took it to the hospital. According to neighbors, who've spoken with the boy's family, doctors tried to reattach it but couldn't.

"That's one of the most well mannered young'ins. When he seen me out in the yard it was ‘Mr. Larry.’ He's an outstanding young man," said neighbor Larry Fincher.

Fincher also said the family's been through a lot lately. The boy's father recently had a heart attack. His mother, we're told, just found a job and doesn't have health insurance yet.

The Animal Control Officer who responded said the dog lunged at him and it took him a while to get it under control.

That pit bull was euthanized Thursday and will be tested for rabies. Police cited the owner of the pit bull, Angela Oneppo, for violating the leash law in Rock Hill.
