FORT MILL, S.C. -- Store owners at a local mall say a new policy may put them out of business, so they turned to NewsChannel 36 for help.

Merchants at Plaza Fiesta say they received a letter from mall management this weekend advising them they have to be open the same hours as the mall, which is seven days a week.  According to the letter, If they’re not open, they’ll be fined $50 each day.  A dozen business owners say that’s not what they agreed to when they signed their lease.

“They said that we could work at whatever hours we wanted to work ... as long as we had it posted for the customers to see when we would be here,” said Brenda Duschl.

“The hours that they now say they want us to work come to 78 hours a week.  For the couple hundred dollars I make a week, there's just no way.  It wouldn't cover labor costs.  It wouldn't cover rent.  There's just no way,” said Mellisa Balk.

NewsChannel 36 left messages for the property managers asking them for an on camera interview, and so far – we haven't heard back from them.
