FORT MILL, SC -- A Rock Hill police officer has been fired after he was arrested early Sunday morning on DUI charges.

Rock Hill Police Chief John Gregory fired Sammy Figueroa on Tuesday.

Officers with the Fort Mill Police Department say Figueroa was traveling down Main Street in Fort Mill near the intersection of White Street at a high rate of speed. When Figueroa crossed over railroad tracks, he bottomed out, officers say.

Figureoa turned onto White Street, where the traffic stop was initiated, after officers say he crossed over the center line, then crossed over the fog line.

Immediately, the officer stated he smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle. When asked if he'd been drinking, Figureoa replied he hadn't had much, but authorities say he failed a series of field sobriety tests.

Figueroa was placed under arrest, taken to the Fort Mill Police Department where the BA machine was not operating properly. Authorities then took Figueroa to the Tega Cay Police Department and offered him a breathalyzer, which he refused.

Figueroa was booked in to the Fort Mill Jail, where he's charged with driving under the influence.

Rock Hill Police say Figueroa has been on the force since October 2009.
