ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- The president of Winthrop University in Rock Hill says he will retire in the summer of 2013.

Anthony DiGiorgio announced his decision Tuesday in an email and video sent across campus. He has led the university since 1989.

DiGiorgio says he is ready to see what life is like outside academia and he thinks the economy has rebounded and state funding has stabilized enough to make it an easier transition to a new leader.

The Winthrop Board of Trustees announced a 15-month process to select a new president.

DiGiorgio and his wife will continue to live in Rock Hill. The university says after a sabbatical for a year, DiGiorgio will be named president emeritus and a distinguished service professor, a role combining public service with consulting, writing and lecturing.
