YORK, S.C. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a 49-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his drug dealer as he tried to collect money he was owed.
The Herald of Rock Hill reports a York County jury found Steven Spagnoli guilty of murder Thursday night.
Prosecutors say 44-year-old Richard Leach went to Spagnoli's York home in September 2010 to collect money he was owed for drugs. But when he got inside, co-defendant Christopher Varnadore testified that Spagnoli beat Leach with a baseball bat, then shot him in the head.
Authorities say Spagnoli then went outside and shot the man who drove Leach to his home. He managed to get away and survived.
Spagnoli's attorney says he shot Leach in self-defense.
