Elder Gallery is sponsoring Carolina’s Got Art! Exhibition October 1-30
Carolina’s Got Art! is a month-long jurored art exhibition and sale, sponsored by Elder Gallery, to celebrate and support artists in North and South Carolina. The number of entries from artists across the two states grew by 50%, from 1,100 entries last year to 1,800 entries this year. The juror who has the difficult task of deciding which works of art will be displayed is Mario Naves, a writer and teacher who lives in New York City. Fewer than 10% of the entries, 136 of the 1,800 entries, make it into the show. Because so many incredibly talented artists apply to be part of this show, there will be two chances to see all of the beautiful works of art. All entries will be photographed and displayed digitally at the Atherton Mill show during the run of the show October 1-30. Also, Larry Elder, the sponsor of the show and owner of Elder Gallery, will choose his favorites that are not on display in Atherton Mill and create a “Salon Show” at his gallery on South Boulevard mid-month. For more details please visit www.carolinasgotart.com and http://www.elderart.com/

Charlotte Community School for Girls is pleased to share that our scholars and 9 other girls from Charlotte schools have been participating in a September afternoon program entitled "Beauty in Our Community". The program, taught by Silent Images, Inc. and other community volunteers, gives 4th-6th grade girls from low-income families the opportunity to explore the beauty of the moment when someone tells a personal story or shares a smile. With cameras and pens/pencils in hand, girls have explored Historic South End, listened to stories of community, photographed beauty, and recorded South End's history and heritage in writing. Other participants that are working with the girls include: Rosie Molinary, Founder, Circle de Luz, and Scott Denham, Director, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Davidson College ,and the Charlotte Post. The girls have already visited these generous local businesses: Common Market, Phat Burrito, Prices Chicken Coop, Fashion Florists, Canine Cafe, Black Sheep, and Spenzac Furniture.
